When most people think of the Ukraine they think Russia, along with food shortages and cold weather. However, Ukraine has a temperate climate much like the rest of Western Europe and the south of the country, bordering the Black Sea, enjoys very hot summers comparable with the Mediterranean.
Kiev is also a lot closer that you would expect - travel by air takes about 3 hours 10 minutes, same than the flying time to most European hot spots. Hotels and apartments are very comfortable and Westernised, ranging from two star hotels and studios to five-star hotels and deluxe apartments with in-built jacuuzis and even saunas.
Kiev (or more correctly Kyiv), the capital of Ukraine, stands among the hills overlooking the Dnepr River in the north central section of the country. Though modern Kiev offers all of the amenities of a large city, less than half of its acreage has been urbanized, leaving more than 100 square miles of verdant parks, fields and forests. Cultural opportunities abound in Kiev, with 32 museums, 33 theatres and a variety of art exhibitions throughout the year.
Kiev also has a wide variety of cafes and restaurants catering for every taste, from O'Brien's Irish Pub to the Arizona and even the Wagon Restaurant made up of train wagons and platforms.
The nights are also well catered for with a range of casinos and nightclubs. Live music shows and strip bars are popular in Kiev. Some shows are quite elaborate, including fireworks. The action usually begins around 23:00 and goes all night. Many clubs stay open until 6am if you have the stamina.
